Cost of living in Oman

Some people interested in a possible expatriation in Oman asked me what is the cost of living here in Oman. So it gives something like this, based on a month of living for a couple :

  • Food shopping : between 100 and 250 Ryals per month (for my wife and me it is 200 Ryals).
  • Petrol : around 20 Ryals if you use your car about 45min each day. you can see how petrol is cheap here
  • Phone : 5 Ryals for a prepaid card (but I don't phone a lot).
  • Car renting : 150 Ryals per month for a basic car, like a Mitsubishi lancer.
  • Renting of accommodation : variable depending on the location, but expect at least 350 Ryals per month for a apartment.
So basic cost of living for a couple is between 525 and 775 Ryals per month. Of course you could buy your own car and it will be a lot cheaper. But you can't live in Oman without a car, or you'll have to take a lot of taxi and it could be even more expensive. You can also rent a room instead of renting a complete apartment.

And optionally you could add :
  • Alcohol : 20 Ryals, for a pack 22 beers (~11Ryals) and 2 bottles of wines (~9Ryals).
  • Cinema : 10 Ryals if you're going 2 times to the cinema during the month.
  • Intercontinental club : 66 Ryals per month (6 months membership for a couple is 400 Ryals)
  • Arab lesson : 30 Ryals, you can learn Arabic at the CFO (45 Ryals per person for a 3 months session)
  • Restaurants & Pubs : 100 Ryals
  • various shopping : 60 Ryals
  • 4x4 renting : let's say you will rent a 4x4 at least once a month to make some tourism : 40 Ryals
Now the "advanced" cost of living for a couple is between 850 and 1100 Ryals per month.

  1. I've been looking for an apartment for someone who is going to move to Oman next month. There are currently no apartments available in Muscat for under RO. 350 a month. Not a single apartment.

  2. You probably right. Actually the price of the appartment is the only info I was not sure, because it is my company that is renting my apartment. I'm going to update my post.

    thanks for the info

Except maybe for the price of the appartment you can be very variable.

  5. Hi there great info helps alot. Can anyone tell me just how long it takes a company in muscat to receive a labour clearance for foreign employment? I have been waiting for almost 2.5 months. Does anyone know the process?

    Sarah

    ReplyDelete
  6. well i would say that this depends on the efficiency of your PRO. The PRO means 'Public Relation Officer', it is a Omani in charge of dealing the official documents with the ministers. each foreign company has to hire a PRO to do this work. If your PRO is efficient the paperwork can be very fast, otherwise you should ask your boss to keep the pressure on the PRO to accelerate the process.

  19. Hello,

I do not plan to settle as an expat in Oman yet, but I will start with an 8 days holidays there. Are taxi expensive for short trip (10km) ? Is the countr warm enough in mid-january to swim in the sea and lay on the beach in maillot de bain :-)
    Thanks for your answers.

    Cyrille

    ReplyDelete
  20. Hi Cyrille,

january is the best month to enjoy Oman : temperatures are ideal to swim in the marvellous sea of Oman and to lay on the beach! Taxi can be expensive if you take them directly from an hotel, but cheaper if you take one in the street. The best is to propose a price to the taxi before you go in it. short trip can be from 1 Rial to 10 Rial !

  26. Hi!
I've been offered a job in Oman (Muscat) at a college for 960 OR.
They provide (+160+30+50) for living expenses.

They don't include housing - that's what the 160 is for.

Would I be able to save much? My main concern is cost of living and cost of a single apartment...

    Thank you!

    ReplyDelete
  27. Suren,
I've been in Muscat for a few months now and have found that apartments are indeed priced around RO300/350 per month. Without a car, transportation will cost a bit (renting a car per month is about RO140/160), and buying food at the local city centre (carrefour) is not too bad-- there exist other locations, too.

I would like your advice if you don't mind. I've been offered a job in Oman to work for an oil and gas company. I am not a technical person. I am an Economist. What do you think would be an acceptable (a range perhaps) salary for an Expat living in Oman?

    Look forward to your reply.

    Cheers.

  52. HELLO All!
A lot of inquiries are there about the cost of living and other aspects in Oman! It is a very beautiful country, very calm and quiet, but if you are so.
Cost of living is minimal comparing to other GCC countries as there are very few options to spend. still a small family needs 250-300 RO for household expenditure. Schooling for 2 kids will be 90-100 RO includes transport...

Housing is costly and expect 300-450 RO for a reasonable decent 1-2 BD living. You need a car as public transportation is taxi centric. But driving license also costs u around 400-500 RO.
At the end of the month what you save also matters, so as per expectation you can calculate that.

Some companies offer you accommodation and other facilities with car, but be careful, check what you get as cash also.

    ReplyDelete
  53. Kindly can someone advice me as what is a procedure for getting a driving licence in Muscat / Oman please ? How much does it cost ? Will my company who is hiring me will pay for this expenditure ? My company is providing me car as a part of the package. Thanks for your help. Danny

  54. In my case, my company organised the process to get a driving license. each company has a PRO ( public relation officer) who is in charge to do the administrative work for you.

Could u just summarize the expenses of housing (with bills), rent a car, average food expense, entertainment (only cinemas)?? If I am having driving license of Saudi Arabia, will it be converted into Omani license easily (or what is the procedure)??

  79. The cost of living in Oman is based on the place where u r going to stay/work. If u r staying in Muscat the rent of apartment will be around RO.300 to 500 RO. If u r staying in small cities like Nizwa, Sur, Ibri etc, the rent for flat will be around RO.150. The food cost for family will RO.150 to Ro.200. For bachelor car is not essential but family it is must. The fuel cost is cheap Rs.13/ltr petrol. Mobile rates are somewhat costly around Rs.6 for local call.
    If u r a bachelor u can manage RO.200 for all.
But for family it will double easily.

    1. Yes. Ave. bachelor's flat rent (250), your monthly transpo. will be about 30 by taxi or you can omit if you find a walking distance flat from your work area (with the stated price range), 100 for food-I mean "basic" food meals for a month, Utilities (power and water)20, if you're OK with a net income of 300-350 then its your call...

    2. Hi. You are so kind for answering most of the questions in this blog. I would also like to do the same. I will not ask you about the cost of living in muscat because i already have an idea from what i've read here. I also think cost of living in muscat is not far from cost of living in abu dhabi (where i am now). I just want to know whether you think it will be a good decision to move to muscat. I've been in abu dhabi for 5 yrs working as an architect/interior designer. I recently got an offer to head the interior design division of their company in muscat. The company has been operating for 12 years. Then they decided to open up an interior division which they have asked me to manage. I just want to know if prospect for development in muscat is good. I also want to know how the business is in my field doing in oman?

I also would appreciate it very much if anybody here has an idea on how much architects or interior designers are getting paid in oman so i would know how much to bargain for.

      Thanks so much.
